The Historian’s Garden Office

This office was designed for a dear friend Steph Mcdougal, based in the US, who works from home from a standalone outhouse on her property in Houston, Texas. A historian by profession, her work involves extensive research, documentation, archival study, and collaboration making a calm yet highly functional workspace essential.

The first step was to spruce up the exterior of the outhouse, transforming it into a welcoming, professional-looking structure that feels inviting even before stepping inside.

Indoors, the brief focused on efficiency and comfort. A spacious work desk with ample storage was planned to support her everyday research needs, while an additional desk allows for collaboration whenever a team member joins her. Open storage and a dedicated printer unit keep everything accessible and organised.

Understanding the importance of pauses during long work hours, we also created a cozy corner with a recliner perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee or taking a short break. The result is a balanced workspace that supports focus, flexibility, and well-being
